Dumfries & Galloway is
an excellent region for walkers and cyclists with mountains, lochs,
forests and coastline. Information on walking and cycling routes
can be found on the Visit Dumfries and Galloway website on the Links
page. The Southern Upland Way, the Galloway Hills and the Glenkens
are all within easy reach for enthusiastic walkers, while keen
cyclists will enjoy the 7Stanes world class mountain bike trails
nearby, as well as the joy of cycling in safety on empty roads and
lanes.
For golfers there are
four excellent golf courses within only a few miles, notably the
outstanding Southerness Golf Club, and also at Dalbeattie, Colvend
and the Solway Links. The boats in the estuary at Kippford belong
to the Solway Yacht Club which holds its regattas in July and August
For children, this is
an ideal holiday spot because the air is clean, the spaces wide and
the choice of activities huge. The sands of the estuary near
Rockcliffe when the tide is out are safe and vast. You can walk out
to Rough Island, tides permitting, and round to Kippford, with just
seagulls for company. Nearby are riding stables, bike hire, and
fantastic activity centres like the Mabie Farm Park and the famous
Cream O’Galloway ice cream factory near Castle Douglas, which has a
large indoor activity centre for a rainy day.
